First, it must be said that holding the hearing was clearly a helpful endeavor. Carping about what it shoulda/coulda been or complaining about what the euphemedia did can be set aside for the moment.
The prospect of impeachment was raised to a new level of legitimacy
..simply by being taken up, discussed, and broadcast on c-span. And many otherwise-dismissive insiders -- including the committee members themselves -- were, in essence, forced to sit and listen to reason for the first time.

I think you reserve impeachment for grave, grave breaches, and intentional breaches of the president's authority. |

Are torture and war crimes not grave? Did they illegally spy on Americans -- before 9/11 -- accidentally? Or rather are you cowering in the face of your duty under the US Constitution and our treaty obligations?

Don't see it, huh Madame Squeaker? -- Do you see that failing to ACT to stop ongoing torture make you a war criminal too? Look at the treaties you are bound by. You'll see that it's true. You'll also see that universal jurisdiction applies to such "Nuremberg" violations by those who act as a firewall against accountability for war criminal regimes.
Like squatters, Bush and Cheney are laying claim to unconstitutional power through openly hostile possession. Members of Congress, who we empowered and charged with the duty of evicting (impeaching) such trespassers, are refusing to act.
By refusing to stand up for We The People -- the true owners of this nation -- Members of Congress have created a national crisis graver than any natural disaster or social ill. It is bigger than any international crisis. By tolerating the intolerable, they are surrendering our capacity to recover from disaster with humanity; to solve our common problems in ways that reflect our common values; and to serve as a force for good in the world.
When the good will of the American people is cut out of the loop no one seeking justice — not our fellow Americans nor people of other nations — can look to us for help.
